Studio Work

Graduate Architecture Studio Project on Belem Brazil:

  • To develop a solution for one of various village problems.
  • Required to generate design and buildings using techniques in Maya, 3D Max & Rhino.
  • My two part solution focused on:
  1. Capturing rain water, treating it with an ultraviolet system for safe drinking and distributing clean water to villagers.
  2. And secondly, exporting bottled water flavored with locally grown acai fruit to stimulate the economy.

Although it rains frequently in Belem, there is inadequate drinking water.

There is great diversity of life in the Rainforest.  At noon a daily down pour contributes to growing vegetation and sustainability.

Case studies are reviewed such as the Taipei example of creating more healthy and sustainable community.

Environmental mediation showing the strength of the sun penetrating a portion of the building using Ecotect software.

The mesh of dynamic curves begins to shape into various building and site components.

Organization: loading dock for cargo ships; bottled drink, research, drinking water distribution, education center, auditorium, library/cultural center, cafe, mangrove brownfield.

Water cones open to collect water and close, forcing water through pipes to ultraviolet purification tank.

Top view with numbered sections through the buildings.

Views with location of acai flavored water bottled for export, cones, brownfield, ultraviolet tanks and water tower.

A view of the proposed (maya generated) water building with cones for capturing rain water.

On the micro level, Belem lacks proper sanitation, clean drinking water, health care, education, electric power and telecommunications.

Weather analysis of rainfall, temperatures, wind and humidity are    considered in the future designs.

Site conditions showing water storage and water flow with routes of hierarchy.

Video showing dynamic flow of water passing through Belem site.  (Using 'hairs' in Maya).

    Case studies of various structures.

Cones 25' diameter fill with rain water, close and push water out to ultraviolet disinfection and filtration where they are distributed for drinking water to people of Belem, Brazil.

Black and grey water runs along small canals and enters the Rio Guamo into the Atlantic Ocean.

A program encompassing education and building includes major goals for Belem.

Environmental mediation placing a portion of the building into an Ecotect program to see the effects throughout the year.

Dynamic curves are generated using hairs in Maya based on the various types and locations of water flows.

Building plans and underlying water flow entering and passing through the site.

Water disinfection with germicidal ultraviolet light is effective, safe, economical, speed, ease of use and free of by products.
